Scale of difficulty
T = Tourism
Itineraries which follow paved or dirt roads, forest paths, cart or mule tracks or trails on smooth terrain which do not present any particular difficulties nor obstacles.The eventual crossing of rivers will be on bridges with parapets or on safe wide walkways.
E = Hiking
Itineraries which make use of every kind of trail or track, on varied terrain including steep upward and downward slopes and in some parts quite rough. Sometimes the vegetation is so thick as to hinder progress but it is never insurmountable (impassable). It might be necessary to cross streams or rivers by wading but only in shallow water in absence of strong currents.
EE = Expert Hikers
Itineraries which follow trails but also go off the beaten track. Here you have to deal with terrain which presents various levels of difficulty: rough and rocky, exposed areas not suitable for those who suffer from vertigo, scree slopes, slippery slopes composed of grass and /or mud,and narrow rocky passages where you need to use your hands to maintain balance or to get through.The vegetation can be a significant impediment in some parts of the excursion. Again rivers or streams may be crossed by wading where this is possible, but in this case in rivers of quite large dimensions (as wide as 20 metres) and streams greatly swollen during the Spring thaw or after torrential rainfalls, thus necessitating competence and great attention.
At this level of difficulty there is a further category of excursions which take place in the presence of snow.
EAI = Excursions in snowy conditions
Excursions which take place in the presence of snow, with or without snow -shoes (snow racquets). Even if they are limited to gentle slopes, without hazards due to the depth and consistency of the snow, nonetheless these EAI itineraries require the correct equipment and the competence suited for these particular meteorological and environmental conditions and the necessary slow progress involved.
